RIC 61 - Happy Birthday!

Sometimes you just don't know exactly where your card is going to end up. This was one of those times.

I started with this very graphic inspiration from Runway Inspired Challenge:

I tried a number of different ideas (who was that who asked in a comment if I ever have cards in the bin? The answer is a very, very big YES!) and finally ended up making Struan's birthday card (his birthday is later this month) with these Red-Baron-WWI-type colours (he's very interested in becoming a pilot and is going to gliding school this summer). But now I'm also getting a Japanese vibe from it. See what I mean?

I used an old Cuttlebug die for the Happy, new PTI dies for the numbers and medium-aged PTI dies for his name (cut 3 times, and stacked, one red over two blacks to provide definition.)

Despite its odd shape, it will fit in a regular 4.25x5.5 envelope.

  1. ...yes, definitely a bit of a Japanese look to it - absolutely the "Happy" (which I have never seen before!). Great colors and funky design...Struan is going to love it!

    ....hey...just realized - 0 stamping!

  2. This really caught my eye, I just love it. The bold red with the circle off the edge is such a cool, funky design. And what a fun way to display the Happy x

  4. Wow! This is an eye catching card!! I love the black and red together. The "happy" is cool looking, not sure if I've been it or not before, but sure do love it. And I love the circle attached the way it is-great place for the numbers. Love how you stacked the letters for the name too. Happy Birthday to Struan!! Hugs, Brenda

  7. Your color scheme is dynamic and instantly eye catching. It's a great graphic take in the inspiration photo. All your die cuts are spectacular. The playful happy is a nice contrast in style to the other cuts. As always, I am amazed by your CAS design.

  11. This is fabulous. I did get that Asian vibe when I first saw the card--I think it's the colors and those overlapping letters. One cool card for one cool boy.

  12. With no intention at all, I also had a kind of 'zen' vibe after I finished my RIC card.
    LOVE this!

  14. Ardyth, this is stunning. It's so funny that you said you saw a Japanese vibe with it, because before I opened your thumbnail at Runway Inspired Challenge, the Happy looked as though it was an oriental symbol!! This is so very cool for a teenage birthday card. I am sure he will love it xx
